The late Mary (Carswell) Lempenau was born March 10, 1900 in Hutchinson, Kan., the daughter of William Christie and Loretta Young Carswell. The Carswell family moved to Topeka in 1903. She was appointed chief of the Kansas Inheritance Tax Division in 1955 and served until she retired in 1965. She represented state employees on a 16 member state committee, which promoted and selected the Kansas Public Employees Retirements System. She published the Kansas Legacies and Successions Tax Review in 1964. She was honored by the Institute of Probate Administration of the Kansas Bar Association and was honored by Washburn University for her contributions to scholarships in the five schools at the university in 1988. She married Bertram Lempenau December 10, 1947 in Topeka. He died June 6, 1972. She passed away April 6, 1997.
