Rachel Francis Snyder*

The late Rachel Francis Snyder, ba '45, was born February 12, 1924 to Otis F. and Lela (Retter) Snyder, and spent her early life in Topeka. She graduated from Seaman High School in 1941 and Washburn University in 1945 with a B.A. in English. She was a reporter for The Topeka Daily Capital from 1943 to 1945, a writer for the Kansas Industrial Development Commission from 1946 to 1947 and a writer for the Washington Post newspaper from 1948 to 1949.

Miss Snyder spent two years as a reporter in Emporia before she was assistant editor for Workbasket Magazine in Kansas City from 1952 to 1956. She was editor of Flower and Garden magazine in Kansas City from 1957 to 1988 when she retired. She lived in Prairie Village and near Mayetta before she moved to Brewster Place in 1997.

She was the author of two books on gardening, "The Complete Book for Gardeners" in 1964 and "Gardening in the Heartland" in 1992. She was elected to the Garden Writers of America Hall of Fame. She passed away October 22, 2000.
