Robert Duffens, ba '47, was born January 19, 1924 in Salina, Kan. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1941 and from Washburn with a B.A. in economics. While he was at Washburn, he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Duffens served as a naval aviator during World War II. He was the chairman of Duffens Optical, a 75-year-old family business, until it was sold in 1996 to Essilor of America. Both of his sons work for the company. He is married to Jean Duffens, born on February 7, 1933. He and his wife set up the Robert E. Duffens Family Scholarship, to go to Kappa Sigma fraternity members with leadership ability who are business or science majors.
