Ilene Ecord fell in love with Washburn University while visiting her aunt in Topeka. She graduated from high school in Fort Madison, Iowa and attended Washburn University in the fall of 1947. Ecord was a member of Delta Gamma and Sigma Alpha Iota - a music sorority. Washburn was also where she met her husband, Jack Ecord. Jack and Ilene made their home in Topeka and owned several local businesses. Two of their three children - Kathi Haney and Jackie Ecord - attended Washburn. Jackie graduated in 2002. Ecord has been an active member of Delta Gamma, serving on the advisory board and many fundraising committees. She had an active part in securing a new home for the sorority after the 1966 tornado. She also helped to establish the Delta Gamma Educational Foundation, which provides scholarships for Washburn women students. Ecord's love of music led her to become an active supporter of the Topeka Symphony, including serving on its board and engaging in fundraising efforts. She was also a member of the Mulvane Art Museum. A supporter of athletics, Ecord is a season ticket holder for Washburn basketball. Washburn has always been a large part of Ecord's life and she finds continual enjoyment in supporting her school in a variety of ways.
