Gerald "Gerry" Stoltenberg was born in July, 1942 in Lawrence, Kan. He received a bachelor of science in civil engineering and an M.S. in environmental health engineering from the University of Kansas. He worked for 25 years for the Kansas Department of Health, including 22 years as Environmental Engineer, and 3 years as State Director of Environment. He was married to the late Linda Wahl-Stoltenberg who attended Washburn and was pursuing a degree in history. Wahl-Stoltenberg graduated from DeMotte High School in DeMotte, Ind. in 1966.  She worked in various secretarial positions, including the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Topeka Zoo. She attended Washburn University over a twelve year period, from 1983 through 1994, although health problems, numerous surgeries, and periodic hospital stays kept her from attending continuously. Linda was forced to stop attending Washburn in 1994 because of increasing health and disability problems. She had completed the majority of history degree requirements, lacking only the final special topic paper and a few hours of elective courses. Linda died in 1997 from complications of diabetes. Her husband established the Linda Wahl-Stoltenberg History Scholarship fund in memory of Linda, to provide financial assistance to a history student whose pursuit of a college education has been made more difficult by personal external factors. The Washburn Board of Regents awarded Linda a Bachelor of Arts degree posthumously in 2007.
