The late Louise (Lungstrum) Hummer was born November 1, 1919 in Topeka. At the age of 19, she was a dance instructor at a downtown Topeka dance studio, the Egyptian Ballroom. The late Dana Hummer was one of her students. He was born June 2, 1917 in Topeka and graduated from Topeka High School in 1935. They dated and were married in Aiken, S.C. in 1943. Shortly after, he was deployed overseas during World War II. Louise worked at the Topeka Supply Depot during that time. The couple was reunited in Topeka in 1945. Dana joined the police department in 1941 and resumed his post in law enforcement when he returned after the war. He became chief of police in 1963 and held the post until he retired in 1973. Dana began several programs in the police department, including the ride-a-long and the Police Athletic League. The Hummer Sports Park in Topeka is named in honor of the couple and it hosts many local high school athletic events.
