James F. Snyder, ba '58, was born on June 11, 1933. He graduated from Silver Lake High School. While at Washburn, he majored in mathematics and history. He was a charter member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and served as president. He was president of the student body, president of the Sagamore men's honor society, in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon, Washburn Players and Washburn Choir and Singers. He was employed as the advertising/public relations manager of Kansas Power and Light, Executive Director of the Kansas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association, and as an auditor with the State of Kansas. Snyder was a member of the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature; he served one term as speaker pro tempore and two terms as the Kansas Speaker. Snyder established a scholarship to honor his late son, Ron, who was a student at Washburn beginning in 1978 and was awarded a posthumous degree in 2002.
