Philip, ba '63,and Lona Morse have a strong connection with Washburn University.
Philip graduated from Washburn University in 1963 with degrees in history and political science. Phil had a successful career in real estate. In 1995 he established Kansas Commercial Real Estate in Topeka with fellow Washburn alumnus, Ken Schmanke. Phil also believes in community service. Phil served on community boards including the Metropolitan Planning Commission for 16 years, the Sheltered Living Board of Directors, serving one year as president, and spent several years serving on the Downtown Topeka Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

The couple's daughter, Dr. Kim Morse, is a professor of history at the University. Philip served as a judge for the History Day competition sponsored by Washburn's History Department from 2004 to 2011. All of these connections motivated the Morse family to create a scholarship in the Department of History. Philip and Lona want to help students graduate from Washburn as well-rounded individuals. The Morses feel a strong education in history helps equip students with the knowledge they need to move forward as good citizens who serve their communities and develop successful careers.
