Dale Pond was born April 7, 1946 in Spokane, Wash. and resided briefly in Seattle and San Diego before settling in Prairie Village, Kan. Dale and Susan married in 1967 while they were attending Washburn University. After Pond received his BBA in 1969, he served as a regional director of sales for an NBC affiliate in Topeka. Pond enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served six months active duty and remained in the reserves for another five years. In 1972 Pond joined Bernstein-Rein Advertising Inc. in Kansas City. Most notable during his nine years with the advertising company was his instrumental role in the creation and development of the McDonald's Happy Meal. In 1981, Pond joined Payless Cashways in Kansas City as vice president of advertising and marketing. From 1993 to 2005 he served multiple executive positions in Lowe's Companies, Inc., including senior executive vice president chief merchandising and marketing officer. Though retired from Lowe's, Pond remains an active member on the boards for Family Dollar Stores and Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. and consults with Hendrick Motorsports. The Ponds currently reside on Lake Norman, north of Charlotte, N.C., and within eight minutes of their daughter, Ashli, son-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren.
