Anderson Chandler, honorary doctorate '08, was born in Wichita, Kan., January 21, 1926 and attended Wichita public schools. Chandler graduated from Wichita East High School in 1943 with his future wife Patricia. He was a Boy Scout in Troop #72 and achieved the rank of Star Scout. Chandler enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school graduation, serving as a Boeing B-17 G bomber flight engineer. In 1948, he graduated from the University of Kansas, where he was a Summerfield Scholar, with a degree in business. He was in the first graduating class of the United States Air Force ROTC and was named a Distinguished Military Graduate and offered a regular Air Force commission. However, he decided on a banking career and married his high school sweetheart, the late Patricia (Hinshaw) Chandler in 1948 and moved to Sterling, Kan., where he began his banking career as Assistant Cashier at the Farmers State Bank. By age 24, he was president. He also served as a Cub Scout Master during his time in Sterling. In 1958, he and his family purchased the Fidelity State Bank and Trust Company and moved to Topeka. He has served as Chairman and President of this bank since 1961. In 2009, Chandler joined the board of directors of INTRUST Bank NA. Chandler was married to Edith Chandler, after Patricia passed away in 1999. Edith passed away June 14, 2013.
