The late Fern Goff was born on July 10, 1920 in Easton, Kan. and grew up in Hygiene, Colo. and Easton, Kan. She attended the Kansas City Business College and took several positions in area banks. Fern and James W. Goff married in 1941, and James subsequently served in World War II. After he returned, the couple made their home in Topeka. Mrs. Goff became a longstanding businesswoman in the Topeka community. She served as office manager for Myers Yearbooks, now Jostens, for 16 years. At the Volume Shoe Company, now Payless ShoeSource, she spent 20 years in the human resources department. During this time, the company expanded from 30 store locations to the 5,000 stores they operate today. Goff was close to her mother and her experiences with her mother in a local nursing home led her to realize the shortage of nurses in the late 1980s. This realization caused her to establish the Goldie Ala Scholarship, in memory of her mother, to assist students at Washburn pursuing a degree in nursing to help more people become registered nurses. Fern passed away March 31, 2010.
