Melba Banion is a long-time supporter of Washburn University. She and her late husband, Robert, were also active in First Presbyterian Church of Topeka and Topeka Civic Theatre. They were supporters of Topeka Festival Singers, Inc. and Topeka Symphony Society. She has volunteered at Doorstep and was a sponsor of Washburn Women's Alliance. 
Robert Banion began his career with Santa Fe Railway in 1943 In Wakarusa, Kan. He held a number of positions for the company in multiple states before retirement. He retired in 1987 as general manager for Santa Fe's eastern lines. After retirement from Santa Fe Railway, now BNSF Railway, he was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Topeka, where he served as an elder and member of various committees. Also, he was the treasurer of the first Topeka Performing Arts Center board, and served on the boards of the Girls and boys Clubs and Topeka Civic Theater.
Mrs. Banion has two daughters and one son.
