Robert Max Gaither, August 9, 1920, ba '42, llb '53 was a member of the football and track teams while at Washburn. He took pilot training at Washburn and joined the United States Army Air Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor as a B29 pilot. He returned to Washburn for law school and received his juris doctor in 1953. Helen Marie Gaither, born May 17, 1922, ba '91, started at Washburn with the class of 1943, but graduated with a B.A. in vocal performance and English in 1991. She was in Washburn Choir, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity and was a homecoming queen candidate. She was a member of NoNoSo women's honorary society and Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity. She took pre-WWII pilot training at Washburn and took Max for his first airplane ride. Max passed away in November of 2013. Marie is a member of Whiting Society and Lincoln Society. The couple had three children, four grandchildren and four great grandsons.
