The late Ronald K. Richey, ba '49, jd '51 and honorary doctorate '89, was born June 16, 1926 in Erie, Kan. While he was at Washburn, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, and during his time at the Washburn University School of Law, he was a member of Delta Theta Phi.

After graduation, he served as an attorney with the Kansas Insurance Department and later as legislative manager for the American Mutual Insurance Alliance of Chicago, Ill. In 1964, he joined Globe Life and Accident Insurance Company in Oklahoma City as vice president and general counsel. He was eventually elected chairman and chief executive officer and maintained that position until 1980. Globe Life was purchased by Torchmark, and in 1982, he was elected president of Torchmark Corporation. On January 1, 1985, Richey was named president and chief executive officer of Torchmark Corporation. He retired from the company, but continued to serve on its board of directors as chairman of the executive committee. He married Florence (Kane) Richey, ba '49. While she was at Washburn, she was active in Delta Gamma sorority. The Richeys have three children and six grandchildren. Ronald K. Richey passed away on August 25, 2010.
