Jacki & Frank* Summerson

Jacki Summerson, ba '68, was born April 15, 1946. Jacki grew up in a small Kansas town in Sedgwick County. Jacki's husband, Frank, bba '69, attended Kansas State for a period but then transferred to Washburn. The Summersons transferred to Washburn University because of its quaint size and community feel, which reflected their small town upbringing. Upon graduating from Washburn, Jacki worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation's data center as a computer programmer, eventually moving to assistant manager. In 1980, Jacki went to work for Ken Orr & Associates, a system design consulting firm, and was vice-president until 1988. Frank began his career with Hallmark Cards in 1969. In 1987, the Summersons bought the Topeka Manpower franchise and expanded by adding franchises in Wichita, Kan., Springfield, Mo., and parts of east Texas. Frank and Jacki also started Professional Security, Inc. and PSI Armored, Inc. Both have been extensively involved in the Topeka community in a number of volunteer roles. Frank was a past member of the downtown Topeka Rotary Club and served on the board of directors of Junior Achievement, the board of directors of the National Federation of Independent Businesses, and was also a member of the Board of Directors of Sales and Marketing Executives for several years. Jacki was instrumental in forming AMIC (AMFO Members Insurance Company), a captive insurance company for the U.S. Manpower franchises to insure themselves for workers compensation. Jacki is the past president of AMIC and served as a board member from 1993 to 2008. Jacki also served on the Human Resources Committee of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry for many years. She is a member and past president of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni Association in Topeka and is also a member of the Topeka Country Club Ladies Golf Association. Jacki has also been a Washburn University Foundation Trustee since 2011. Frank passed away in January of 2010.
