Dan Lykins, jd '72, was born January 22, 1946 in Atchison, Kansas. After graduating from Maur Hill High School in 1964, Lykins attended St. Benedict's College for a year before attending Kansas State University. He received his bachelor of science degree in political science from Kansas State University in 1968. After earning his law degree from Washburn Law School in 1972, he joined the Topeka law firm Bryan, Lykins & Hejtmanek, P.A., and has remained in that practice since. Lykins has tried over 100 civil and criminal jury trials in Federal and State courts of Kansas. His practice deals primarily with aiding those involved in serious personal injury claims, motor vehicle claims, product liability claims, and wrongful death claims.

Lykins has long been active in politics. He has worked for numerous Democratic candidates and officeholders both in Kansas and nationally. He served on the staff of Gov. Robert Docking from 1969 to 1972, was the executive director of the Kansas Democratic Party in 1972, and co-chaired President Clinton's Kansas reelection campaign in 1996. Additionally, he was the Democratic candidate in 1998 for Kansas Attorney and the 2002 Democratic candidate for 2nd District U.S. Congressional seat. 

Dan and Judy Lykins have been married for more than 40 years. They have four children.
