Mayo M. Schmidt, bba '80, was born August 27, 1957. While at Washburn, he earned both athletic and academic scholarships. He was team captain of both the football and track team and received the Outstanding Player Award for football. After graduation, he signed a two-year contract with the Miami Dolphins, but left during the first year to pursue a business career.

Mr. Schmidt served as president, CEO, and director at Viterra, Inc., a global food ingredients company. During his tenure, he re-shaped Viterra transforming it into a global enterprise represented across four continents, supplying base nutritional food ingredients to customers in over fifty countries. During his tenure commencing in 2000, Viterra grew from a $54 million dollar market cap to $7.5 billion.
 
His accomplishments include Financial Post's Top 10 CEO Scorecard Rankings in 2011, named CEO of the Year in 2009 by Canadian Business Magazine, and was awarded the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal.
 
He currently sits on the Board of Directors of Agrium Inc and the Global Transportation Hub Authority. He was a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executive Officers, executive committee member of the Conference Board of Canada, Trustee of The Conference Board Inc. USA, and Harvard's Private and Public, Scientific, Academic and Consumer Food Policy Group, and is on Washburn University Foundation's Board of Trustees.
