John & Ruth*  Stauffer

John H. Stauffer was born April 8, 1928. He is a native of Arkansas City, Kan. Stauffer earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Kansas in 1949. He was a reporter for the Topeka State Journal before becoming editor of the Newton Kansan in 1954. Three years later, he became editor and general manager of the Kansas City Kansan where he remained until returning to Topeka in 1972 as general manager of the Capital-Journal. He served as editor and publisher of the Capital-Journal until becoming president of Stauffer Communications, Inc. in 1986. He is retired but continues as a member of the editorial board of the Topeka Capital-Journal. He was married to Ruth (Granger) Stauffer. She was an Emporia native and fellow KU alumna. She completed her degree in 1949 and majored in sociology with minors in business and psychology. While Stauffer served in the military during the Korean conflict, she worked at the Emporia Gazette newspaper, when her husband returned, she retired to raise her family and spend more of her energy as a community volunteer. She was highly active in various aspects of the community as a leader and volunteer. They have three children. Their son, John H. Stauffer Jr., is a graduate of Washburn University.
