James Lee Ketcherside, bba '58, was born on July 27, 1935 in Topeka, Kan. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1953. While at Washburn, Ketcherside played baseball, was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and worked at the Kansas State Historical Society. While working at the Kansas Historical Society he met Norene Catron and they married in June of 1959. After returning from military service, his first employment was with the Santa Fe Railroad in the auditing department of the general offices located in Topeka. He then moved to the Taylor General Insurance Agency in Topeka. In May of 1965, he joined the Farmers Alliance Mutual Insurance Company as a commercial underwriter. Following several promotions he was elected to the office of Chairman of the Board, President and CEO from 1985 until his retirement in 1998. Norene (Catron) Ketcherside, b ed '60 and m ed '66 was born on August 22, 1938 in Topeka. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1956. During her years at Washburn, she participated in Young Democrats, was on the Dean's list, a Whiting Scholar, a MacVicar scholar, and graduated cum laude. She also worked at the Kansas Historical Society while attending Washburn. Following graduation, she was employed as an elementary school teacher by the Topeka School District. After the family's move to McPherson, Kan., she taught elementary school for U.S.D 418 until her retirement in 1999, ending her 35 year teaching career. Norene passed away on April 18, 2009. James and Norene have three children and six grandchildren.
