The late Gertrude McAlister was born on June 25, 1913 in Albany, Ore. She graduated from Albany High School and then attended Oregon State University before the Great Depression required her to go into the work force. She worked in the secretary of state's office in Salem, Ore. for several years before becoming a supervisor in the Department of Motor Vehicles. She moved to Washington, D.C. to work for Capital Airlines. She became an administrative assistant to the vice president of operations and maintenance. She met her late husband, Stuart, at the company where he was a pilot. Stuart McAlister, ba '30 and jd '33, was born on November 10, 1908 in Holton, Kan. He enrolled at Washburn in 1926 and graduated in 1930 with an economics degree. While he was a student, he was president of Student Council, president of Metro Club, a member of Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Alpha Delta. He practiced law for 10 years in Parsons, Kan., where he was the city attorney. During World War II, he was a pilot in the United States Navy. In addition to being a pilot with Capital Airlines, he was the assistant vice president of the company from 1945 - 1962 and vice president of properties for United Airlines from 1962 - 1972.
