Joseph W. Morris, ba '43, jd '47 and honorary doctorate '81, was born in Rice County, Kan. on April 28, 1922.  He graduated from Reno Community High School in Nickerson, Kan. in 1939. While at Washburn, he majored in political science and graduated first in his law school class.  He earned his Master of Laws from the University of Michigan School of Law in 1948 and his Doctor of Science of Law in 1955. 

After his graduation from the Washburn University School of Law, he began working in the legal department of Shell Oil Company in 1948. He stayed until 1960, when he joined Amerada Petroleum Corporation where he became associate general counsel and general counsel and served until 1972. For several years, Morris is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Tulsa College of Law and was dean from 1972 to 1974. In 1974, he was appointed United States District Judge and later became Chief Judge of the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Thereafter he was named vice president and general counsel of Shell Oil Company in Houston. He is currently a member of the board of directors and a shareholder in the Tulsa office of GableGotwals. Morris and his late wife, Deane Conklin, had three children, two of whom are graduates of Washburn. He also has two step-daughters with his wife, Dona.
