The Honorable Sam A. Crow, jd '52 was born May 5, 1926.  Prior to attending college, Crow served in the Navy during WWII from 1944-1945.  He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1949 with a bachelor's degree and came to Washburn University to attend the School of Law.  After law school, Crow was on active duty in the Army during the Korean War, before entering the Judge Advocate General's School at the University of Virginia. 

During the next 23 years, Crow worked for a private practice.  From 1952-1953, Crow was a law clerk for Rooney, Dickinson and Prager; from 1953-1963, partner with Rooney, Dickinson, Prager and Crow; from 1963-1970, partner with Dickinson, Crow, Skoog and Honeyman; from 1971-1975 senior partner with Crow and Skoog. Crow was selected as part-time U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District of Kansas from 1973-1975 and later became full-time from 1975-1981.  During this time Crow completed the JAG basic course, advanced JAG course, JAG officer career course, and military judge court certifications.  In 1975, he completed the selective service military course in Washington, D.C., and received certification from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in National Security Management in 1977. 

By the end of Crow's military career, he reached the rank of Colonel and served the country for more than three decades, retiring in 1986.  On November 24, 1981, President Ronald Reagan nominated Crow to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. Crow was confirmed by the Senate and was commissioned in December 10, 1981.

Judge Crow was founding Master of the Topeka American Inn of Court which was renamed in his honor in 1997 the Sam A. Crow American Inn of Court.  He served as president from 1992 to 1995.  The Sam A. Crow American Inn of Court emphasizes excellence in litigation and legal ethics to improve the skills, professionalism, and ethics of the bench and bar. Judge Crow provides scholarships for students to join the Sam A. Crow American Inn of Court. 

Judge Crow served on the Washburn University School of Law Alumni Association's Board of Governors from 1994 to 1999.  In addition, he was honored in 2000 as the Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award recipient.  Crow received an Honorary Doctor of Law from Washburn University in 2006. 

Sam married Ruth "Rush" Crow on January 30, 1948.  The couple has two sons, Sam A. Crow, II, D.O. and Dan W. Crow, J.D.
