Paul Hoferer, jd '75, was born January 30, 1946 in Kansas City, Kan. He received a B.B.A. from Central Missouri State University in 1972. He is also a graduate of the Institute of Business Economics and Management at the University of Southern California. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Hoferer joined the Santa Fe law department in Topeka in 1975, after his graduation from the Washburn University School of Law. He was promoted to General Attorney for Kansas in 1989, assistant general counsel in 1994, assistant vice president in 1995 and general counsel in 1999. He served as vice president and general counsel for the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company, Fort Worth, Texas from 2002 to 2008. He is married to Jeanne (Smith) Hoferer, bba '80, who was born on April 23, 1948 in Columbia, S.C. She holds a M.P.A. from the University of Texas-Arlington. She graduated summa cum laude from Washburn University where she was a Pollak Scholar and called to NoNoSo women's honorary. Jeanne previously served as Nancy Kassebaum's regional representative from 1980-1984 and was elected a Kansas Senator from 1984 to 1989. She also served as Washburn University Alumni Director from 1989 to 1996. Jeanne worked for the Federation of State Medical Boards in Texas before she retired. 

She and her husband have since returned to Kansas. The Hoferers have one son and one daughter.
